Rainy Days With Dogs

The rainy season can be a bit of a downer for dog parents. Whether your pup loves splashing in puddles or prefers to stay dry indoors, wet weather can make daily routines uncomfortable and tricky to manage. Read on to learn how you and your dog can enjoy this season together!

Tip 1: Indoor Activities

When the weather is just too miserable for long walks, there are plenty of ways to keep your dog entertained indoors! If your pup is getting less outdoor time, make up for it with some extra quality time together. Here are a few fun ideas:

  • DIY enrichment - Hide treats in a rolled-up towel or an egg carton and let your dog sniff and scavenge for them! You can also turn mealtime into a game by hiding kibble around the house for a scent-based scavenger hunt.

  • Play Tug - Tug-of-war is a fantastic way to burn off energy and engage your dog’s brain at the same time. A short tug session can leave your pup happily tired and ready for a nap.

  • Training - Rainy days are perfect for brushing up on manners or teaching new tricks! Practice leash walking, impulse control, or fun commands. Training not only improves your dog’s behaviour but also provides valuable mental stimulation.

Relax Together - If you have an older or lower-energy dog, they’ll appreciate simply spending time by your side. Cuddle up with a good book or TV show, give them some gentle scritches, and enjoy some cozy time together ❤️.

Tip 2: Walk Planning

Even when it’s raining, getting outside is important for both dogs and humans. With a little planning, you can stay (mostly) dry and make the most of your walks:

  • Check The Weather - Look for lighter rain periods throughout the day . Even a short break in the drizzle is a good opportunity for a quick walk!

  • Plan Your Route - Opt for tree-covered trails, city sidewalks with awnings, or routes that include pet-friendly shops where you can take shelter during heavier showers.

  • More Shorter Walks - If your pup (or you!) gets cold easily, try several shorter walks instead of one long one. This keeps everyone comfortable while still ensuring your dog gets their outdoor time.

Winter Gear For Dogs

Whether your dog needs rain gear depends on their size, coat, and tolerance for cold. Small, short-haired, or thin-coated dogs often benefit from a jacket, while larger breeds or those with thick coats may not need one.

If your dog isn’t a fan of getting dressed, introduce their gear gradually — and don’t forget the treats! A little positive reinforcement goes a long way toward making jackets and boots less of a struggle.
