Stress-Free Halloween Tips for Your Pup

The excitement of the season can be spooky for our furry friends…and not the fun kind! Halloween decorations, fireworks and costumes can be downright terrifying for dogs. Read on to learn how you can make this spooky season stress-free (and even fun!) for your pup.

Tip 1: Planning & Preparation

A little planning goes a long way in helping your dog handle Halloween night. Whether you’re hosting a festive get-together or welcoming trick-or-treaters, make sure your dog is part of the plan!

Take your pup for an early walk before the evening festivities begin to avoid fireworks or scary costumes. During the night, white noise, calming music, and enrichment activities can help drown out the sounds of Halloween and keep your dog relaxed.

If your pup tends to get anxious, consider speaking with your vet about situational anxiety medication to help take the edge off.

Tip 2: Management is Mandatory

While you’re enjoying the Halloween fun, make sure your dog has something enjoyable to do, too! If you’re expecting guests or trick-or-treaters, set up a cozy, quiet space away from the action. Offer enrichment activities, play calming music, and give your pup a safe spot to settle.

Halloween Fun for Dogs!

Halloween doesn’t have to be all about managing stress — it can be fun for your pup, too! Try these festive ideas:

  • Trick-or-Treating! - Does your dog love meeting new people? Check out this pet-friendly trick-or-treating event in Vancouver this October!

  • Stress-Free Costumes - Many costumes can be uncomfortable for dogs, but simple accessories like a festive bandana or decorated collar can be just as cute — and much more comfortable.

  • Socialization Walks - Got a puppy? Use this season as a socialization opportunity! Take them out in the days leading up to Halloween to explore the sights and sounds of the season. Lawn decorations, inflatable figures, and store displays can be spooky at first, but fun when introduced slowly and positively.
