Leash Manners: Focus in Busy Public Spaces
By Rhiannon at Raintown Dog Training
As the weather warms, our beautiful city comes alive with tourists, events, and outdoor fun. All that extra activity can bring excitement — and even stress — for our dogs! Read on for practical tips to improve leash manners and build calm confidence.
Tip 1:
Capturing Good Behaviour
Reinforcement is everything in training — what gets rewarded gets repeated! Bring high-value treats (think: chicken, cheese, or your dog's favorite soft snack) on every walk. Anytime your dog walks nicely by your side, mark the moment by saying “Yes” and reward.
Start by treating for even one or two good steps, and gradually space out the rewards as your dog improves.
Tip: Adjust based on your surroundings. Your dog might go a whole block in a quiet area before needing a reward, but in a crowded market or park, they may need more frequent reinforcement.

Tip 2: Set Expectations
If your dog greets every person or pup you pass, they’ll start to expect those greetings — and may get frustrated when they don’t happen. Instead, try allowing greetings only occasionally, like once every 5 encounters. This helps your dog see greetings as a bonus, not a guarantee.
You can also teach that calm behaviour earns attention. Ask for a sit or wait before allowing a greeting, and skip the interaction if your pup is too excited.
When skipping greetings, politely let others know, “We’re in training!” and give your dog enough space to stay focused and composed.

Plan Ahead!
Many dogs find large crowds overwhelming. When possible, walk during quieter times of day or choose low-traffic areas. You and your dog will both appreciate a peaceful stroll around the neighborhood more than a crowded Saturday walk on the seawall.
